6 Simple Ways to Improve Your Gut Health

Whether you're on a gut-healing journey or you're looking for ways to improve your gut health every day, there are several little (yet important) things you can do to feel your best.

Since the gut is connected to everything, including your brain health, mental wellness, and hormones, it's important to consistently take care of it. This will result in improved digestion, better sleep habits, and more energy!

Here are 6 simple ways to improve your gut health:

Eat foods with prebiotics, probiotics, and resistant starches

Although you can take supplements every day to support your gut health, nature also provides SO many incredibly delicious and nutritious foods. There are three gut-healthy ingredients that I always recommend to my clients: prebiotics, probiotics, and resistant starches.

Foods with natural prebiotics

  • Asparagus

  • Onions

  • Garlic

Foods with natural probiotics:

  • Yogurt

  • Kefir

  • Sauerkraut

Foods with healthy resistant starches:

  • Green bananas

  • Rice (cooked and cooled)

  • Potatoes (cooked and cooled)

Cook with colorful veggies

Speaking of veggies, did you know that the more natural color in your veggies, the better they are for your gut? I often say to "eat the rainbow," as there are so many vegetables and fruits that have vibrant colors with so many nutritional benefits.

A few of my favorite colorful veggies include:

  • Spinach and kale

  • Yellow squash

  • Carrots

  • Eggplant

  • Bell peppers

Try breathwork to rest and digest

Breathing is one of the most beneficial activities for improving gut health. We all breathe all day long, but there are breathing techniques that specifically help your gut's environment, help you relax, and also improve your digestion.

I recently became certified in ThetaBreathwork, which is a meditation and breathing technique that has helped me and my clients so much with their gut health.

Get some sunlight every day

Another powerful healing agent for your gut is sunlight. The gut simply does not like stress — a stressful environment can translate into gut issues like bloating, gas, constipation, or diarrhea.

What I love to recommend is getting 15-30 minutes of sunlight each morning as you are starting your day. It's also great to get outside in the middle of your day to wake up, take a break from your computer screen, and get some fresh air.

Stay hydrated

Water is another essential ingredient for digestion. It helps break down the foods in your gut, helping things move along. Water is also really important for digesting toxins and alcohol — so it's important to stay hydrated throughout the day!

Tip: If you’re feeling constipated, drink room-temperature water with lemon in the morning before eating and coffee!

Eat seasonal produce

Did you know that eating produce in season is SO much better for your gut? When fruits or veggies are in season, that's when they are the freshest, giving your body essential nutrients and vitamins.

The most seasonal produce for the summer includes:

  • Avocados

  • Arugula, kale, and spinach

  • Beets

  • Berries and cherries

  • Fennel

  • Peaches

  • Squash
